ABC News Ran My Made Up Story | Fakes, Frauds & Scammers

In 2015, two articles by a blogger named Rachel Brewson on the women’s online magazine xoJane went viral. They were about her personal experience as a liberal dating and falling in love with a Republican before their disagreements about Trump tore them apart. She got lots of attention and even appeared on ABC News with her ex-boyfriend to talk about their story.

The only problem was that she didn’t actually exist.

Cracks in the story began to show as readers noticed inconsistencies in the blogs, including that the Rachel Brewson on TV didn’t look anything like the photo used for Rachel Brewson the author. The character of Brewson had been concocted by the staff of a web money making scheme called Review Weekly that wrote under various fake characters for various real publications. We hear from the marketing consultant who was most central to creating Rachel Brewson, Kenny Hyder, about the scam.

In a series of candid interviews, Fakes, Frauds & Scammers relives some of the most audacious scams and fraudulent stunts of our time from the mouths of the perpetrators themselves. Whether it’s money, fame or simply an addiction to lying, we find out what motivated these tricksters and whether the highs, lows and ramifications were worth it in the end.
